Special thanks to Mike Gerrells, Tony Caminiti, Mike Oakes, Patrice Headington, Valleydale Academy, the team at the Waffle House across the parking lot for keeping me going with coffee, Ron Rabun, Lisa Ponder, Jonathan Fuller, Andrew Duxberry, Vicki and Victoria Boyce and anyone I may have forgotten that has helped to put this production on its feet! Director’s Notes

This show is true community theatre.  We have seasoned veterans on the stage as well as actors making their stage debuts.  And that’s really what community theatre is about.  Letting the audience enjoy a show for two hours and hopefully forget about all the troubles of the day and just relax.  Putting this show together has been a joy and the rehearsal has been full of a lot of laughter.  I hope you, the audience, enjoy the show as much as I have enjoyed pulling it together.  Thank you so much for your support of South City and I hope you laugh a time or two.  This play and our lives are all about endings and new beginnings.  And how we grow from each and every one.  And thank you Granddad for teaching me that a well-placed curse word can always make you laugh! This show is dedicated to you.

Cast and Crew Bios

David Kimbrough (Lucas Brickman) is a 19-year-old theatre major from Oneonta, AL. Some of his past credits include Bonnie and Clyde (Clyde Barrow), Tuck Everlasting (Miles Tuck), Alice by Heart (Caterpillar), and The Play That Goes Wrong (Max Bennet). This is David’s first show at the South City Theatre, and he is very grateful for the cast and crew that he has worked with.

Steven Ross (Milt Fields) Steven was last seen on the South City Theatre stage in Catfish Moon (Frog), and his journey with SCT includes memorable roles in Elvis People, The Odd Couple (as both Manolo in the female version and Murray in the male version), Almost Maine (Danny), and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Theseus). His work has also been featured with Park Players, Birmingham Festival Theatre, Leeds Arts Council, and Homewood Theatre. In addition to acting, Steven is a skilled theatre photographer, capturing many of Birmingham’s most compelling stage moments. He is proud to serve on the South City Theatre board of directors. Ba-dum-bum

Thomas Robinson (Ira Stone) Thomas Robinson is glad to be back “home” at South City Theatre where he started in community theatre and currently serves on the board. You may recognize him from his roles in The Murder Room, The Coarse Acting Show, The Night of January 16th, and Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors here at South City. Thomas has also directed Death and Taxes here at SCT and at the new Hueytown Community Theatre. Some of his other memorable shows around town include The Ice Front (Morten) at Birmingham Festival Theatre; Dearly Departed (Junior); and The Mousetrap (Detective Trotter), both with Belltower Players; and Why Bump Off Barnaby (Medkins) at Homewood Theatre. This has been a special role for Thomas; getting to play a character based on Mel Brooks!

Dakota Fowler (Kenny Franks) Dakota Fowler attends the University of Alabama majoring in Creative Media and Theatre. He is extremely excited to join such a funny and exciting show with an incredible cast. Some of his previous credits include Clue (Wadsworth), The Night of January 16th (Defense Attorney Stevens), A Few Good Men (Daniel Kaffee), Arsenic and Old Lace (Mortimer Brewster), and Spamalot (Bedevere). Thank you to the cast and crew for making the rehearsal process so fun.

Holt Thomas (Max Prince) I’m back! Did ya miss me? You may have seen me last show in The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) or War of the Worlds or Covering Dish. It’s been a busy season! But closing the season with this show, with this cast has been complete blessing. “I once again must thank Melanie and Lee, whose love and support they give at home, allow me to be here with you fine people.”

Leah Tkacik (Helen) Leah is so excited to have the opportunity to be in this production! She was most recently seen in The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged (Leah) at South City Theatre.  Previous credits include BOOTH! The Lincoln Conspiracy (Lucy) with the Cahaba Theatre Group, and as an ensemble member in opera productions from her Alma Mater, the University of Montevallo. She would like to thank her parents for their constant support of her dreams, Clay for giving her the chance to step into this show, and all of her wonderfully talented cast-mates for this enjoyable process. Enjoy the show!

Robin Wallace (Carol Wyman) is eager to show you a much different side than you may be used to seeing from her onstage. Always at home at SCT, Robin has performed in many productions throughout Alabama, but rather than list them here, would prefer to use the time and space to thank YOU for coming out and supporting local theater. The actors on stage have worked so hard to flesh out and bring these characters to life for you, have each done extensive research on the real people they are portraying and only want to do them justice. Lucille Kallen (the real Carol) was a pioneer in the 50s and Robin is honored to introduce her to you. (She thanks Emma Thomason for working with her to bring Carol to life. She couldn’t have done it without her.)

Kevin Grohoske (Brian Doyle) Kevin wandered into the theater looking for an Irish bar. After a series of confusing events, “none of which involved Guinness,” he found himself cast in Laughter on the 23rd Floor. With no prior acting experience, Kevin is now desperately learning to act before opening night. He asks that audiences be kind and refrain from throwing produce unless it’s soft and locally sourced.

Shawn Reese (Val) is excited to walk the boards of South City Theatre for the first time in this very funny Neal Simon play. With decades of experience under his belt, he has appeared in both plays and musicals in theatres across the region and in New York. His most recent work was as Juror #4 in ACTA’s well-received production of 12 Angry Men. While he’s lost track of the exact number of shows he’s been in, some of his favorites are Around the World in 80 Days (Phileas Fogg), Oklahoma (Curly), Cabaret (Ernst Ludwig), and Will Roger’s Follies (Will Rogers). He thanks Clay Boyce for this rare chance to use a funny foreign accent and his beautiful wife Susan for all her love and encouragement.

A. Clay Boyce (Director) is thrilled to be back with South City Theatre.  Some of his favorite roles on the acting side of the stage have been: Hamlet (Hamlet) with Park Players, The Play That Goes Wrong (Chris) with the Community Arts Council of Blount County, and Guys and Dolls (Nicely-Nicely Johnson) with ACTA, which was directed by his talented daughter, Victoria Boyce.  Favorite shows that he has directed include Shadowlands (Park Players), Driving Miss Daisy (South City Theatre) and Steel Magnolias (Birmingham Festival Theatre).  “I couldn’t do this madness without the support of my amazing wife, Vicki and my daughter Victoria and we wouldn’t have a show without YOU, the audience.  Thank you for supporting me and South City Theatre.” This one is for Granddad.

Patrice Headington (Co-Stage Manager) She has been involved in theatre her whole life and loves being involved in both on stage and behind the scenes. She has stage managed The Sound of Music and The Life of Chief McIntosh, an outdoor production in Georgia that ran for multiple seasons. She’s also worked on sound for The Boys Next Door at Aurora Theatre and was assistant director for Steel Magnolias at Birmingham Festival Theatre. Patrice is excited to be backstage managing again and is thrilled to be part of this production!

Katy Walker (Lights / Sound) This is Katy’s third time doing lights and sound for a show, branching out from acting. She is no stranger to the stage, though, having been on-stage or backstage in more than 40 shows over the last two decades.
